Lot Essay

THROUGHOUT THE 1880S, SISLEY LIVED IN THE REGION OF THE FONTAINEBLEAU FOREST. HIS WORKS FROM THIS DECADE ARE FREER IN TERMS OF TECHNIQUE AND PALETTE AND STYLISTICALLY BEAR RESEMBLANCE TO MONET'S ARGENTEUIL CANVASES. SISLEY USES SMALL, RHYTHMIC BRUSH-STROKES TO ENLIVEN THE ENTIRE SURFACE OF THE CANVAS, AND HE INTERLACES WARM YELLOWS AND LILACS WITH GREENS AND BLUES, BALANCING PASTEL AND PRIMARY TONES TO RECREATE THE BRIGHT SUNLIGHT AND MOOD OF A SPRING DAY.

FROM 1888... SISLEY'S PAINTINGS SHOW HIM AT THE HEIGHT OF HIS POWERS. ALL THE EXPERIENCE OF THE PREVIOUS DECADES WAS BLENDED IN THESE CANVASES WHICH AMOUNT TO THE SUMMATION OF HIS OUTPUT: THE PAINT IS RICHLY APPLIED...THE BRUSHWORK MORE INSISTENTLY RHYTHMICAL, THE EXECUTION MORE RAPID AND THE COLORS MORE VIBRANT... INDEED, THE ALLA PRIMA EFFECT OF THESE CANVASES AMOUNT TO A REMARKABLE TOUR DE FORCE. (C. LLOYD, "ALFRED SISLEY AND THE PURITY OF VISION" IN ALFRED SISLEY, EXH. CAT., ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS, LONDON, 1992, P. 25)
