Lot Essay

The plates in this lot represent Charles Mattison Elleard and Lucina Foster Elleard, the great-grandfather and great-grandmother of Charles Elleard Whitney, the present owner. Charles M. Elleard was elected as the Whig candidate to Constable in 1849 during the Gold Rush in Sacramento, California. An entrepreneur, Elleard, was a successful business man, with interests including gold mining and real estate. In 1863, Elleard arranged for a troupe of Chinese jugglers to travel and perform throughout the United States.

Accompanied by two original announcement flyers for performances by the Chinese acrobats.
