Lot Essay

The above curtains were commissioned by Chareau from Hlne Henry, a close artist friend, a leading curtain maker of the Art Deco period and a member of the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM), Paris. Chareau, himself, designed the wrought-iron curtain rods.

See Marc Vellay and Kenneth Frampton, Pierre Chareau, 1984, p. 20 for a period photograph which depicts UAM members at a luncheon, which included Madame Henry, on 4 February 1932. Chareau was amongst the founders of UAM, a group of designers and artists who severed ties with the Socit des Artistes Dcorateurs in 1929 to form the UAM.
