AN APULIAN RED-FIGURE AMPHORA
attributed to the painter of copenhagen 4223
circa 350-340 b.c.
The A-side with a youth and a boy standing within an Ionic naiskos, the youth nude but for a mantle draped over his shoulders, his traveler's hat behind him, holding a spear in his right hand, the boy delivering a sheathed sword and a shield, a hound between them, a hanging fillet above, a thick band of ivy below with a male and female offering-bearer on either side of the naiskos, a band of scrolling tendril above; the B-side with two male and two female offering bearers around a stele surmounted by a cup and tied with fillets, a band of wave above; a band of ivy in added white on the exterior rim, stripes on the neck with palmettes above, palmette complexes under the handles, a band of meander with saltire squares below the scenes, details in added white and yellow
