FIRST EDITIONS, the first title one of 1500 copies, the Continuation one of only 500 copies printed. The Pennsylvania Hospital was the first permanent hospital established in the United States; its founders included Franklin (who served as its first Secretary and later chairman), members of the Penn family and Lt. Governor James Hamilton, and it was incorporated by an act of the legislature in January 1750 (the text is printed in the Account). By 1761 additional subscriptions were required and, to explain and justify the hospital's expenditures to date, Franklin was requested to give a detailed Account of the institution's first years. The Continuation furnished similar information, with a lengthy list of all the contributors and bequests.
