8o (198 x 121 mm). (Some light browning throughout, and occasional foxing). Contemporary gilt-ruled calf (rebacked, corners worn). Provenance: William Shippen (1736-1808), who delivered the first series of obstetrical lectures in America, and was one of the founders of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, Physician-in-Chief to the Continental Army, and Director-General of Military Hospitals during the Revolutionary War (ownership inscription).

FIRST EDITION. Pott rejected many old theories of hernias, and treatments based on these theories. He classified hernias by their condition, gave the first description of congenital hernia, and recommended immediate operation on cases of strangulated hernia.
