Lot Essay

This drawing is related to Sussex, 1964, one of a series of landscapes that range from being highly representative, as in the present case, to more abstract images. The landscape depicted here is in rural New Jersey; from 1960 to 1964 Lichtenstein taught at Rutgers University in New Jersey, and until 1963 had a studio in nearby Highland Park before moving to New York.
