Lot Essay

Fenton travelled to Russia for three months in the autumn of 1852 with his close friend, the engineer Charles Vignoles, who had been involved in the construction of a bridge over the River Dneiper at Kiev. This journey is well documented as being Fenton's first major photographic trip, during which he photographed a wider range of mostly architectural subjects than simply the newly constructed bridge.

A rare and fine example from Fenton's earliest body of work.
