Born in London in 1837, Frederick Hollyer became fascinated with photography at an early age. He was greatly influenced by the pre-Raphaelites and in 1860 he began to practice photography, becoming a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in 1865. In 1870 he opened his studio at 9 Pembroke Square where he photographed many well known artists and writers as well as making reproductions of famous paintings, often using the platinum process in which he became a master. In 1893 he became a member of the Linked Ring.
