Lot Essay
The design of this corbel is particularly interesting as it conforms very closely to work aboard the Titanic. Although traditionally thought to have been used as a master-cast from which mouldings were taken to adorn the Titanic, this is unlikely as the foliate work is actually perforated in some areas making a successful cast most difficult and unlikely. As Titanic was one of three "Olympic Class" liners, it is more reasonable to suggest that this head was made for Titanic's sister, the Britannic whose fittings were 90 installed before the order comandeering her as a Hospital Ship arrived and all the decor removed to be refitted at a later date. Britannic was mined in the Agean and so a quantity of fittings have survived. The corbel offered here is strikingly similar to work salvaged such as the bronze cherub adoring the Grand Staircase and may well be work from the same craftsman. The most likely position for this would have been either against a deckhead or supporting a door jamb (see detail from Titanic interior)
