The 'Royal George' sank at anchor at Spithead; in order to effect hull repairs her cannons had been run to port so the hull would list. Unfortunately this, combined with the stores being loaded and being crowded with many visitors, dipped the sills of the lower ports under water and she sank quickly with the loss of about nine hundred lives
