4°. WOODCUT PRINTER'S DEVICE ON TITLE, HISTORIATED WOODCUT INITIAL, AND TAIL-PIECE. (TINY HOLE IN FINAL QUIRE.) MODERN BUFF STIFF PAPER WRAPPERS.

FIRST EDITION of Ammanati's famous letter to the Accademia del Disegno, the artist's guild at Florence, in which he denounced the display of nude sculpture, including his own colossal figure of Hercules. One of the leading Mannerist sculptors and architects in Italy, Ammanati was deeply influenced at the end of his life by the Counter-Reformation and the Jesuits. His new found religious awareness led him to reconsider artistic expression, including his own; he also denounces here the Neptune fountain in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence. Gamba 1192 "assai rara"; Schlosser-Magnino pp. 373, 375; Censimento A1517.
