[BARDI, Ferdinando]. Descrizione delle feste fatte in Firenze per le reali nozze de serenissimi sposi Ferdinando II Gran Duca di Toscana, e Vittoria Principessa d'Urbino. Florence: Zanobi Pignoni, 1637.
4° (241 x 176mm). Half-title, engraved title armorial, one (of 3) folding plate at end showing the festivities and the movements of the horse ballet engraved by Stefano della Bella, typographical-ornament headpiece, historiated initial. (Light spotting.) 19th-century blue sheep-backed marbled paper boards (small repairs to front hinge). Provenance: Pierfrancesco Rinuccini (title inscription).
RARE description of the marriage of Ferdinand II and Victoria of Urbino. The festivities began with the coronation of Victoria as Granduchess of Tuscany outside the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore which was richly decorated by the architect Gerardo Silvani. The Archbishop celebrated the religious rite in the presence of the court and many foreign dignitaries. Popular celebrations followed over the next several days: horse and chariot races, fireworks, a circus with exotic animals. Highlights of the festivities were performances of 'Le Nozze Degli Dei', a 'favola cantata' by G.C.Coppola with sets by Alfonso Parigi, staged in Ammannati's Court at the Pitti Palace, and an equestrian pageant in the palace's garden. The pageant featured a jousting show, followed by an equestrian ballet adapted by the Balì Fernando Saracinelli from Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata with choreography by Agniolo Ricci. The open-air theatre and the technical structures were designed by Felice Gamberoni. cf. Clubb p.205; Gamba 2750; Vinet 611 (calling for 3 plates).
