Lot Essay

Two examples of the Nikon S3M have been offered here since our first auction in 1972. These cameras serial numbered 6600056 and 6600090 were sold in Cameras and Optical Toys, 14 January 1993, lots 164 and 165, the latter achieving a world auction price for any Nikon camera which still stands.

The Nikon S3M was launched in April 1960 and was the only Nikon half-frame camera made. According to production records 195 examples of the camera was made in the serial number range 6600000-6699999 which makes it, according to Rotolini, 'the most unique of all the Nikon rangefinder but, based on production, also the rarest'.
