A VERY RARE GOLD AND SILVER-GILT WEDDING HEAD-DRESS

The elaborate domed crown composed of dragons, phoenixes and prunus blossoms, set with numerous glass jewels and embellished with pink and turquoise silk pompoms, figures of the Eight Immortals and circular panels with the characters feng tian gao ming (heavenly mandate), the front with a multiple strand fringe borne in the beaks of phoenixes composed of glass beads dividing shou-character pendants and terminationg in glass droplets, and another shorter row of beaded fringe, with fuchsia silk tassels borne by dragons on each side, with shopmark han zhen lou to the Eight Immortals, minor losses and repairs

cf. a Penang Peranakan wedding head-dress sold in these Rooms, 27 March 1994, lot 214. The present example, popular with the Sumatran Peranakan Chinese, bears many similarities to the Penang Peranakan example.
