A SILVER PRESENTATION LOVING CUP
Maker's mark of Whiting Mfg. Co., New York, circa 1894
Flaring baluster on a circular base applied with a band of seashells and kelp at intervals, the lower body on each three sides repousse and chased with cresting waves enswirling anchors held up by chains applied in high relief along the edges and framing on one side an etched naval steam yacht, another side etched and applied with the Massachusetts state coat of arms, crest and motto, and a presentation inscription below a star on the third side, the curved handles formed as stylized dolphins; marked under base
10in high; 84oz. 10dwt.

Lot Essay

The inscription reads: "Naval Brigade M.V.M."
The Massachusetts state motto reads: "ENSE PETIT PLACIDAM SUB LIBERTATE QUIETEM" (By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty)
