Lot Essay

Samuel Lewis, born in 1818, was apprenticed to Samuel Kirk of Baltimore and then set up his own shop in Washington, DC. He first appears in the D.C. directories in 1843 as a Gold and Silversmith, Watchmaker and Jeweler, and is listed through 1867. The present mark is on record at the DAPC at the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Library.
