Lot Essay

This piece is a one of the numerous souvenirs produced to commemorate the first successful laying of the trans-Atlantic cable between the United States and Great Britain on August 5, 1858. Tiffany & Co., among others, created a whole line of accessories incorporating fragments of the cable.
