In their first season after their formation in 1888, Celtic were defeated by Third Lanark in the replay of the 1888-89 Scottish Cup final played on 9th February 1889 before 16,000 spectators at Second Hampden. The first match, played on 2nd February 1889 ended in a 3-0 win for Third Lanark. However, prior to the first match taking place, both teams had decided that the final would be played as a friendly because of the snow storm which had made the pitch unplayable. The crowd of 17,000 who attended the first match were unaware of the decision to play the match on a friendly basis and were somewhat mystified when the players on either side 'warmed up' by having a snowball fight between them.
Thomas Edward Maley and his brother William were part of Celtic when the club was founded in 1888. Thomas was born on 8th November 1864 and played for Cathcart F.C. and London Caledonians before joining Partick Thistle in 1886. The same year he played for Third Lanark and Hibernian before re-joining Third Lanark in Auguast 1887. His connection with Celtic began in May 1888 and he retired in 1891 having made just the nine appearances for the East End club, scoring six goals. He joined Preston North End in January 1892 and became a Celtic director in April 1897 before joining Manchester City as manager in August 1902. He was suspended 'sine die' on 4th June 1906, but the suspension was lifted in July 1910 and he became Bradford Park Avenue manager on 25th February 1911 a position he retained until March 1924. Tom Maley died on 24th August 1935.
