Lot Essay

James Ashcroft was born in September 1878 at Liverpool and joined Woolwich Arsenal in 1900 from Gravesend United. Between 1900 and 1908 he played in goal for Woolwich Arsenal in almost 400 games and he played for England at full International level on three occasions. He also played for the Football League twice and in May 1908 joined Blackburn Rovers. He stayed with Rovers until joining Tranmere Rovers in 1913.
