Lot Essay

The gores, a 1:1 scale copy of Martin Behaim's famous globe of 1492, were prepared by Dr. Ernest George Ravenstein to accompany his book Martin Behaim His Life And His Globe (London, 1908), listed in Philips' Universal Atlas 150th Anniversary Edition (p. 22). These gore sheets are described by Zögner (p. 46, item III/1), and described and and illustrated by Plhorn and Laub (pp. 754-5, item 3.39), who note that they were reproduced in the 1960s by the Flemming-Verlag of Hamburg, and describe and illustrate two of the later copies (pp. 756-758, items 3.41 and 3.42).
