HEBREW MANUSCRIPT - Marriage Contracts. Two ketubbot from Rome. The first: Wednesday, 14 Tishrei 5579 (14 October 1818). Hand-painted on vellum, 760 x 547 mm. Groom: Abraham Barukh, son of Ezekiel Fiatilli(?); Bride: Rosa, daughter of Jacob Treves. In the style of ketubbah decoration characteristic of Rome, this contract shows its text and decoration on a rectangular page with a triangular shaped bottom contour. The central text is flanked by side panels that contain footed vases, out of which rise floral stems; biblical verses frame the entire page. An oval cartouche suspended within the lower border and flanked by two horns filled with flowers displays a heraldic device, a rampant lion beside a tall branch, which likely belongs to the groom's family. Enclosed in modern glazed frame; not examined outside of the frame. The second ketubbah, from 18 Adar 5621 (1861), hand-painted with a floral border on vellum. Sabar, Ketubbah, pp. 146-157 -- Two other Italian ketubbot, the first from Padua, 8 Tevet 5506 (1746), ink and paint on vellum. Enlarged biblical inscriptions surround the text. The second from Moncalvo, 1st of Sivan 5578 (1818), ink and paint on vellum; delicate floral vases and the symbols of the Levi and Cohen families, relating to the bridegroom and bride, respectively, surmount the text -- Three ketubbot from Florence: The first, inscribed Sunday, 3 Elul 5638 (1878); Ink and paint, probably later, on vellum. Arched-top vellum framed by large-lettered inscriptions. The second inscribed Wednesday, 7 Cheshvan 5488 (22 October 1727); Ink on vellum; 403 x 581 mm. Text surmounted and framed by large inscriptions in brown ink. The third, inscribed Sunday, 8 Elul 5640 (1880); Ink and paint on vellum. Illustrations of the Sacrifice of Isaac and Jacob's Dream appear above the text, within foliate frames; monumental inscriptions in color above and below text; scrolled branches frame the page -- Ketubbah inscribed Cortemeori(?), Friday, 28 Cheshvan 5542 (16 November 1781); 422 x 334 mm. Later(?) ink and paint on vellum. Groom listed as: Abraham, son of Isaac Joseph Barukh ha-Cohen; Bride as: Esther Brakha, called Rosa Brakha, daughter of the late Raphael Hayyim, called Jonah Menachem Cantoni. The profusely decorated page surrounds its text with bands of flora, foliage and inscriptions. Within an arch above the ketubbah appear the crowned, blessing hands of the priestly benediction. A row of birds stands beneath the text -- Ketubbah inscribed Finale, Tuesday, 5 Sivan 5595 (2 June 1835); 470 x 422 mm. Ink and paint on vellum. Groom given as: Elisha Ye'uda, son of Yom-Tov Hai Donati; Bride: Hannah, daughter of Barukh Abraham Pesach. Arched-top rectangular page with colorful frames and inscriptional band.
