Lot Essay

From the northern Ivory Coast and French Sudan, the Senufo people were outstanding musicians, using gongs and a variety of drums, horns and flutes. Here, the drummers wear raphia skirts, ankle bracelets and a feather stuck in a headband, still worn today by folkloric groups.

We are grateful to Patrick Van Roekeghem, co-author (with Attilio Gaudio) of Etonnante Côte d'Ivoire (Paris, Karthala, 1984), for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
