Lot Essay
These wallpaper panels are after a set by Rveillon, the leading manufacturer of decorative panels of the period. The original set dates from 1788 and an example is in the Muse des Arts Dcoratifs, Paris, illustrated in L. Hoskins, The Papered Wall, New York, 1994, p.82, figs. 105-6. This set unusually combined the firm's normal block-printing technique with painting in diluted inks and the application of gold leaf, making it particularly expensive. A set of six panels of this pattern was sold Sotheby's Monaco, 14 June 1982, lot 431, while a set of three was sold in these Rooms, 30-31 October 1996, lot 416.
