by Claude Héricourt, marked, Paris, 1768/1769, with the charge and discharge marks of Julien Alaterre, the miniature by Nathaniel Hone, signed with monogram and dated 1770
Oval box, the cover centred with an oval portrait miniature of a young lady in blue dress, within composition panel inlaid with two-colour gold checkerwork and narrow foliate engraved border, the sides and base with similar panels, with shaped foliage and flower thumbpiece
65 mm. (2 5/8 in.) wide

Lot Essay

Nathaniel Hone (Dublin 1718-1784 London) was one of the founder members of the Royal Academy which openend in 1769. According to D. Foskett (Miniatures: Dictionary and Guide, Woodbridge, 1987, p. 188), "his portraits of ladies are usually attractive and have great charm."
