THREE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY BODKIN CASES
the shortest South Staffordshire, circa 1770, the second Paris, 1789, struck with the discharge mark of Jean-François Kalendrin, the longest French, circa 1780
The first one cylindrical, of enamelled copper with reeded gilt-copper mounts, painted with landscapes within slightly raised gilt cartouches, on a white enamelled ground adorned with a slightly raised dotted diaper pattern; the second one of oblong octagonal section with rounded ends, of black lacquered papier mâché encrusted with stripes of gold piqué posé shaped as stylized lotus flowers and pine cones, the gold mounts stamped with stars; the third one cylindrical with rounded ends, of dark green lacquered wood painted with colourful flowersprays, with reeded copper mounts
