With fruitwood shaft and well-knopped hozel, the shaft with a band of whipping repair and bearing a paper label inscribed in ink Probably Simon Cossar, with suede grip and listing
the hozel 6¼in. (16cm) long

Lot Essay

This rare metal-headed putter is one of only a few known to exist, as tradition dicated the use of wooden clubs in the era of the feather-filled golf ball and especially with putters. There is a famous portrait of Mr. Henry Callender by Lemuel Francis Abbott, dedicated to the Society of Golfers at Blackheath which was painted circa 1807, beside him to his left resting against a firesurround is an almost identical club to this.
