The present drawing is part of a large series of drawings of Teste di carattere, which include portraits, heads of apostles and saints, musicians and philosophers.
Piazzetta often executed several versions of his Teste di carattere, always with minor differences. Piazzetta drew the same Levantine model as in this drawing on several occasions: one datable 1740, showing the right hand and different clothes, is in the Pierpont Morgan Library (G. Knox, Piazzetta, A Tercentenary Exhibition of Drawings, Prints and Books, exhib. cat., National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1983, no. 44) and another wearing a large hat and holding a pipe is in the Galleria dell'Accademia, Venice, R. Palluchini, Piazzetta, Milan, 1956, no. 155, illustrated.
A drawing at Windsor shows the head of the girl along with the Levantine in identical dress to the one in the Pierpont Morgan Library, A. Blunt and E. Croft-Murray, Venetian Drawings of the XVII & XVIII Centuries in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen
