Birmann was a pupil of Johann Rudolf Huber in Basel and later of Johann Ludwig Aberli in Bern. Between 1781 and 1790 he worked in Rome with Louis Ducros and Giovanni Volpato. He was strongly influenced by Philipp Haeckert's neoclassical views and landscapes.
Upon his return to Basel, he founded a publishing house specialising in views of Switzerland.
