Lot Essay

Although the Nancy region of France avoided being annexed by the Prussians in 1870, Daum together with many other members of the School of Nancy, demonstrated their outrage at the invasion of the Alsace-Lorraine region by frequently incorporating symbolic motifs, such as the thistle (liberty) into their work.
