etching, 1654the extremely rare first state (of three), before the additional drypoint work, a very fine, rich and atmospheric impression, with the circular marks on the face and the tunic of the saint, and at the plate edge at the upper right, characteristic of the earliest impressions, on fine Oriental paper, with thread margins or trimmed on or fractionally within the platemark, a diagonal repaired split at the upper right edge extending towards the head of the figure at the right, a tiny tear extending approx. 4mm. into the subject at the right sheet edge, otherwise generally in very good condition
