A PAIR OF GEORGE II MAHOGANY SIDE CHAIRS
Attributed to William Hallett
Each with a rectangular padded back and seat covered in close-nailed gros and petit-point associated French early 18th Century needlework in wool and silk, with foliage and strapwork on a yellow ground, the back and seat centred by an ornate Chinoiserie cartouche, the back with two figures by a wine-press, the seat with two mythological animals by a fountain, the reverse with yellow silk damask, on cabriole legs headed by a pendant-hung shell and gadrooned angle-brackets, on claw feet below a circular collar, with sunk brass and leather castors, with protective cotton covers, both with a material label to the webbing inscribed in ink on one 'No 4' and on the other 'No 6', additional corner blocks to one chair, with 20th Century restorations to the needlework, the design within the central cartouche of the seats, re-applied to a later backing
