A GEORGE II MAHOGANY SOFA

En suite with the preceding lots, the rectangular padded back, shaped sides and seat covered in close-nailed gros and petit-point associated French early 18th Century needlework in wool and silk, with foliage and strapwork on a yellow ground, the back and seat centred by a pair of ornate Chinoiserie cartouches, two with two figures by a wine-press, one with two figures working a loom, and one with two mythological animals by a fountain, the reverse with yellow silk damask, on cabriole legs headed by a pendant-hung shell and gadrooned angle-brackets, on claw feet below a circular collar, with sunk brass and leather castors, with a protective cotton cover, restorations, two legs and one foot with restored breaks, the front and back seat-rails with later inner strengthening, reduced in width, originally approx. 88 in. long, with 20th Century restorations to the needlework, the designs within the central cartouche of the seat, re-applied to a later backing and the seat with a central vertical join in the needlework
