A GEORGE II MAHOGANY CORNER CHAIR
The curved toprail above a pair of arched splats to each side, with turned column supports, the padded seat covered in nailed red leather, on cabriole legs headed by scrolled ears, on pad feet, one ear replaced, inscribed in chalk to one block 'Peck Aug 1900', the right- hand upright with restored break, possibly rerailed
Provenance
Almost certainly Charles, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham (d.1782) and by descent to his nephew
William, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam (d.1833) and by descent.

Lot Essay

The chairs in the 1924 photograph above were later moved to the Fitzwilliam house in Ireland, Coollattin, Co. Wicklow, and were sold from there in 1977 (listed in Christie's house sale catalogue for 26 September, lot 99, but sold privately). They have very similar legs, particulalrly the lappets, but more elaborately pierced backs with fretwork in the rungs of the ladder. A
