A portrait bust of King George III, known as the Jubilee Bust, was presented by Turnerelli to His Majesty after the Golden Jubilee dinner which took place at Windsor Castle on the evening of 25 October 1809. That bust is now in the National Portrait Gallery (inv. no. 3903). It was the first occasion the King had sat for a bust since his coronation, almost fifty years earlier. The Jubilee bust consolidated Turnerelli's fame and reputation as a sculptor and he received a number of private and public commissions for further examples of the composition, including the present bust and another version that is in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle (inv. no. 11910).
