Captain Sir Spencer Lambart Hunter Vassall, K.H., R.N, was born in 1799, the son of Lieutenant-Colonel Spencer Thomas Vassall and Catherine Brandreth Backhouse Evans. Lieutenant-Colonel Vassall was killed at the taking of Montevideo on the 7th February 1807. His widow Catherine subsequently married Thomas Chetham Strode of Southill House, co. Somerset in 1816 who presented the box to his step-son in 1827. Thomas sadly died in the same year. Captain Vassall enjoyed a distinguished naval career eventually becoming a captain in January 1837. He was knighted in 1838 and died in London in 1846.
