The top with a marquetry border of quatrefoils and banners, the front inlaid with similar Gothic and Romanesque motifs in amboyna, sycamore, ebony, walnut and amaranth, the frieze of the breakfront section applied with carved Gothic bosses of various kinds, the three cupboards each enclosing two solid walnut adjustable shelves, the glazed section also lined in green baize, the main door stamped GILLOW & CO.

Lot Essay

Gillows employed two leading freelance designers, Charles Bevan and Bruce Talbert, for pieces in the fashionable "Geometric Gothic" taste. This cabinet is very much in Bevan's style.
