Lot Essay

Georges de la Chappelle is known for a set of portraits purportedly made during a visit to Istanbul with the French ambassador. The group, entitled Recueil de divers portraits des principales dames de la Porte du Grand Turc, were etched by Nicolas Cochin around 1648. This painting follows the tenth etching in the series which depicts a dancer holding a musical instrument in each hand.
