Lot Essay

The scene is very likely an episode from the Third Anglo-Dutch War (1672-1674) and may well show the Battle of Texel (21 August 1673) with the duel between Cornelis Tromp's Gouden Leeuw and Sir Edward Spragge's Royal Prince, in which the latter was dismasted. In the left background a ship bearing the arms of Zeeland, probably Zeelandia, is fighting a French squadron. To the far right, Vice-Admiral Isaac Sweer's flagship Oliphant is depicted in battle.
