Lot Essay

Dirck, brother of Frans Hals, was a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Haarlem from 1627 until his death. He specialised in merry companies of this type, set both in and out of doors; his earliest known example dates to 1623 (Hermitage, St. Petersburg).
