Lot Essay

The present painting uses for a prototype of the head of David, a painting by Guido Reni in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (see Pepper 1984, no. 67, pl. 94). We are grateful to Dr. Adelina Modesti for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs (private communication, 2 December 2009).
