Lot Essay

Richard Walker ('Henry Bone's Pencil Drawings in the National Portrait Gallery', Walpole Society, LXI, 1999, p. 339, no. 398) mentions the preparatory drawing for this miniature which is inscribed 'Pope Paul 3rd by - Titian. April 1810. Original O. Humpry Esqre for George Bowles Esqre.'
This miniature is after Titian's portrait of Paul III without cap which hangs in the National Gallery, Naples.
Pope Paul III (1468-1549) was born Alessandro Farnese. He became Pope from 1534 until his death. He called the Council of Trent in 1545. He was one of the few popes to have fathered children before his election. He was a patron of the arts, commissioning Michelangelo to paint 'The Last Judgement'.
