Lot Essay

The sitter in this portrait bears a strong resemblance to Claudia di Ferdinando I de' Medici (1604-1648), who married Federigo Ubaldo della Rovere in 1621, and was the mother of Vittoria della Rovere (see K. Langedijk, The Portraits of the Medici, Florence, 1981, I, pp. 368-380).
