Jenner reports jovially on a bout of ill health: 'Time says, "you shall have diseases" -- "very well Time", say I "-- we'll not fall out about that'; yet he is thwarted when wanting to let blood by a catalogue of misfortunes -- the glasses for cupping lost, the points of all the lancets broken and the leeches all dead in the last hard frost; he goes on to discuss a 'Circular' he has issued on the subject of 'Varioloids', which has produced very satisfactory answers: 'Some people suppose me to have said that in every instance they prevent the Vaccine from giving security to the constitution from smallpox. This is a mistake ...'; he also refers to a paper intended for the press 'respecting the effect of the Pustule formd by the application of tartarizd antimony to the Skin'. He concludes 'If I maintain my post here much longer, a literary assistant of some kind or another will be absolutely necessary, for my own labours are nearly at an end'.
