Lot Essay

Somov's friends, the artists Nikolai Milioti and Alexandre Benois, were not indifferent to his work:
...and Milioti arrived about 6 o'clock...I showed him my paintings, as he hadn't seen all that I have. He was completely amazed. He was delighted by my nudes and erotic watercolours...He was deeply impressed by 'Cauchemar de la fièvre brulante'.
Diary entry dated 8 April 1938, p. 429

I showed the paintings that he hadn't seen already to Shur [Alexandre Benois]. 'Fièvre brulante' made him laugh: 'This is the real Somov!' he said.'
Diary entry dated 14 April 1938, pp. 429-430
