Lot Essay

Born 1987 in Bengkulu, Lugas Syllabus is the youngest of the crop of Indonesia's contemporary art scene. Lugas' works integrates refreshing elements from both traditional and modern sources, such as folklore, novel, and comic tales.

Garuda with the Golden Egg depicts a scene of a man wearing a bird costume successfully stealing the golden egg from the Garuda bird. Presumably, this work is influenced by one of Indonesia's exciting comic Garudayana . Garudayana tells the adventure of a treasure hunter whom one day discover the existence of golden egg at an ancient site, Lembah Para Batara. In Lugas' version of Garuda with the Golden Egg , the three magical friends, resembling Disney's characters, are seen helping the man to steal the golden egg by luring the Garuda with a fish to leave its nest.

With this satirical work, Lugas presents an honest expression of daily life and social issues – A visual commentary on greed, questioning on one's integrity and principal in life.
