2° (430 x 287mm). 70 (of 71) double-page maps, all mounted on guards. (Lacking titles to both works as well as map 29A of Bavaria, 100mm tear into map of the Americas affecting New Guinea but without loss, repairs to gutters on verso of several maps at beginning but without loss, tiny repaired wormhole to maps 24 and 24A but with only very minor loss, a few guards lightly wormed but not extending into maps, occasional very light spotting and browning, heavier to maps 34A and 35 and index leaves particularly d3-d4, tiny rust hole to map 40, short marginal tear to map 43, index leaf b6 with corner repair.) 17th-century vellum (covers bowed and soiled, head of spine worn and defective, lacking ties). Provenance: ink manuscript index of the Supplemental maps written in a 17th-century hand bound in at beginning.

THE 'FIRST ATLAS' WITH ORTELIUS’ FIRST SUPPLEMENT. This second Latin edition of 1571 contains the first edition of the Additamentum Theatri Orbis Terrarum. As Van der Krogt states, ‘Ortelius was very customer-orientated with his additions. He waited until a reasonable number of new maps was ready for publication and added them all at once to a new edition’ (IIIA, p.36). The map of Bavaria is not called for on the Additamentum title-page, and is not included in the present lot. Adams O-331; Van der Krogt IIIA, 31:002 and 31:010; Phillips 372; Shirley 122 (world map in his first plate, first state).
