Lot Essay

We are grateful to Bart Cornelis for noting that the figure is closely related to that in a picture in the Kunsthistoriches Museum, Vienna, which is recorded as being signed and dated '1664' in the 1837 museum catalogue (inv. no. 659). A red chalk study survives for this figure - Shepherd boy washing his feet, signed or inscribed 'v Velde', 8.8 x 17.4 cm. (Vorden, Victor de Stuers collection).
