Lot Essay

Visit www.christies.com for additional information on this lot. The first drawing is a reduced version of Soane's design of 1797-9, seen in six larger drawings in the Soane Museum (Soane, folio V, nos. 8,9, 49, 64, and pp. 111-2; cf. exhibition, Royal Academy, The Age of Neo-Classicism, 1972, no. 1341). The style of the present drawing is closely comparable to that of several of Soane's small-scale preliminary designs for the Bank, suggesting that it may be by the architect himself.
