SELWYN IMAGE (1849-1930) WAS A POET, PRIEST AND ARTIST. HAVING GIVEN UP THE PRIESTHOOD HE WAS APPOINTED SLADE PROFESSOR AT OXFORD IN 1910. BYRON'S PHRASE 'YOUNG BARBARIANS AT PLAY' WAS APPLIED TO OXFORD BY MATTHEW ARNOLD IN THE PREFACE TO HIS ESSAYS IN CRITICISM, 1865.
